Gov. Steve Beshear's goal is to reduce energy usage in state and local governments, which would be a cost savings to the state. One of the projects being funded with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) dollars is the High Performance Sustainable Energy Research Laboratory.
Additionally, the Department for Energy Development and Independence is partnering with the Department for Local Government under the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program to award more than $6.6 million to local governments that enter into a competitive grant process. Eligible projects include energy efficiency retrofits, renewable energy projects, energy audits and other long-term cost-saving projects.
The Finance and Administration Cabinet received nearly $19 million from the Department for Energy Development and Independence through a grant from the ARRA to improve state buildings through energy management. Also, the Finance and Administration Cabinet created the Green Bank of Kentucky, which is an energy efficiency revolving loan fund that promotes energy efficiency in state buildings. The Green Bank received more than $14 million in ARRA funding.
