As schools become more energy efficient, it becomes more feasible to consider utilization of solar power to meet the energy demands of the facility. A number of schools are pushing energy efficiency levels below 30 kBtus/sq ft/yr, providing an opportunity to introduce Kentucky's first net-zero energy school.
ARRA funding provides a partial match to schools that install solar thermal or photovoltaic systems sufficient to bring the school to net-zero or near net-zero energy use. Schools that have been awarded funding include:
- $1.3 million grant for Richardsville Elementary School, Warren County. The school will become the nation's first net-zero energy school.
- $2 million grant for Turkey Foot Middle School, Kenton County. This funding will help the school achieve net-zero energy usage.
